Is my 7-month-old sleeping too much?

My 7-month-old DS takes between 2-4 naps a day that lasts from 30 minutes to 2 hours. The total hours of naptime is about 4 hours daily. When he was about 5 1/2 months old we started trying to stretch out his awake times, but it's very hard to get him to stay awake for more than 2 hours before he starts to fuss. In general, I have trouble getting him to do floor time or even to play by himself with me sitting close by. He's not very interested in any of his toys when he's on the floor, whether he's on his back or tummy. This makes it hard to stretch out his awake time. Sometimes I end up just holding him for ten minutes or so to reach the target later naptime. My question is, is he sleeping too much, or do some babies just need a lot more sleep than others? He sleeps for about 11 hours at night.

I think this is normal, and it is nice you have some quiet time for yourself. Pretty soon this might change, though. I think babies also go through specific phases, just like us. Sometimes more sleepy than others.

Thank you everyone for responding. I think I just needed to be reassured. My husband keeps saying, "Why can't he stay awake for longer than 2 hours at a time?" It's good to know that there is a range of normal for babies.

I don't see anything wrong there if he sleep 11 hrs straight at night and have 2/4 naps during the day for 30 minutes that's fine your actually one of the lucky ones lol

Sounds fine. Babies generally sleep precisely as long as they need to, and yes every baby is different.

I don't think 15 hours out of 24 is too much for a 7 month old. Some babies sleep more, some less. Wanting Mommy right there is also normal for a 7 month old.

Is he alert and happy when he is awake? Growing fine and meeting milestones? If so, I wouldn't worry.

If I remember correctly, my oldest was taking 2 naps of 1.5-2 hours and sleeping 12 hour nights (waking once or twice to nurse in that 12 hours) at that age. My youngest was a cat napper (average nap about 20 minutes... 2-5 of those a day) and had 10-11 hour nights (waking 1-5 times).

There is a really good book written by a sleep doctor, called Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. I don't agree with everything in it, like one method he suggests if a child is not sleeping is cry it out. If course that isn't your problem, but aside from that he explains the healthy sleep habits of babies and children of different ages. It should be at your library if you want to look at it, and you can read just the chapter for his age, I know you probably dont have time to read a whole book! Anyway, I think it did say that babies around that age should only be awake a couple of hours at a time...can't remember for sure. I highly recommend that book, and it's written by a Harvard doctor so I trusted the information too (even though I didn't use all the methods).
