Is my breast milk drying up?

[deleted account] ( 3 moms have responded )

I have a 6 month old and I don't seem to be producing a lot of breast milk. After he feeds off both breasts I have to give him a bottle of formula, usually only a could of ounces, to fill him up. I heard that getting your period can lower your breast milk but only for a few days but I sem to be getting lower and lower. I breastfeed my son more then I bottle as I was told by my doctor that the more I do it the more milk I will get but it's not helping. Is there anything I can do to increase my breast milk?

Supplementing can ruin supply. I would stop the supplements. Feed a little longer, a little closer together. Your supply will increase. It could be that he's going through a growth spurt and they will feed more often during this, it's because they need to to increase your supply. Milk production IS all about supply and demand. You have to ask your body for it to produce it. You could also pump after feeds as well to help increase your supply as well. Good luck!

Yes he's on solids now and has been for almost a month. He still breast feeds, as he prefers the breast over a bottle, but I don't have enough to fill him up.
If I pump, I'm only getting about 1.5 ounces, and that's after pumping both breasts. I don't know what else I can do as I drink a lot of water to try to keep my fluids up, and I have a thyroid issue so I'm not sure if or what I could take to try to increase my supply.

Has he started solids yet? Now is about the right time to try him on solids if you haven't already.
