The urgent care doctor prescribed me keflex for a bad ear lobe infection, he said it was safe to take but I have read several blogs that state other wise. Has anyone else taken it while 12-14 weeks preggo?

I second what Katherine said, not going to repost a link since she already did :)

I was prescribed Keflex when I was 39 weeks pregnant because I had a kidney and bladder infection. It gave me horrible nausea and some mild diarrhea on top of the pregnancy nausea, but the infection did go away and my daughter was fine.

I had to take it when I was about 15 weeks pregnant with my first girl as well for a similar infection (both girls were laying on my kidneys) and got the same symptoms - nausea/diarrhea, but again, my daughter was fine and I had no problems with the pregnancy.

That said, I have a tendency to get strong reactions to most antibiotics and am allergic to several, so my symptoms may be more from my personal reaction history than anything else.

Your best bet for any info on drug safety while pregnant or nursing is http://www.safefetus.com It lists just about every drug under the sun and it's safety level. Good luck with the yeast infection...those suck. :/

It's a derivative of penicillin. It's a class B, which is not too bad. It just hasn't been studied a whole lot in pregnant women. BUT they always factor in the risks vs the benefits.
There have been no known side effects or fetal harm.

I had it twice while I was pregnant, once in my first trimester and once in my third. My doctor explained it wasn't the safest antibiotic, but that I needed a stronger antibiotic and the infections posed more of a risk that a category B drug.

Glad to hear that your ear is healed. Congrats on the baby :)

For the yeast infection - lots and lots of yogurt (to eat) it has healthy bacteria that really kick butt on yeast. I always have yogurt in my house because my girls eat it like there is no tomorrow, but it works well for me too - I always eat more of it if I am on antibiotics.

Cranberry juice can also help a bit, same principle as with it helping with bladder infections - it has stuff in it that helps.

It is scary and a lot of the time doctors just shrug your fear off. I always checked before I went in to see if there were things I shouldn't be taking. I know you are not supposed to take ibuprofen at all because it has been known to cause problems, but tylenol is okay. Some antibiotics, cough medicines, etc are okay, but a lot of the time you have to ask because they won't volunteer the information - I was lucky to have docs that did volunteer the info when I was pregnant :)

Thank you that puts my mind at ease, I just never knew anyone to take this neck medication well pregnant and was a little uneasy about the effects on a fetus.
