Is there a community here for mothers with kids with tics ?

[deleted account] ( 6 moms have responded )

Im looking for Moms who have kids with tics. My son started having verbal tics in Oct. of 2009 and they went from one tic to another. Now he has 3 at the same time this week. He also has ADHD and Type 1 diabetes so Im a little overwhelmed right now and was looking for some support from Moms who understand. I am new to tics and my son cant get into the psychiatrics to get diagnosed until next month. is there anything I can do in the meantime to help make life easier for him. I read that I should ignore the tics so they dont get worse. He came home from school yesterday and said the kids were mocking him...This breaks my heart more than anything!! Also I can have him "Homebound" from temporarily from school until we at least get a diagnoses...Does anyone think that is a good idea? I do.. but need more opinions. Thanks Sara

Hi Sara, I am a couple years late seeing your post. Just wondering how things are going now?

Oh thank you that is really great advise. Im gonna sit down with Gavin and listen to what he is feeling. And youre right because if the kids understand a little better what he is going through they will probably be less likely to tease him...We fear what we dont know right?! Tell you husband I appreciate his input and it was helpful.

if school is a source of stress for him (which being teased right now seems like it might be) he said he would definately consider it until you either have a diagnosis or he can figure out how to control them a bit better on his own. Maybe you could see what Gavin thinks...he might not want to be kept home either - it might "single him out" more when he does go back. When my husband was diagnosed as a teenager the dr gave him phamplets about it so that he could inform his friends about why he had the tics - he said it was very helpful and because of that people stopped teasing him at school. Maybe once you have a diagnosis you could talk to his teacher and maybe have him or her work it into health class so the other children understand.

Thank you Karen. I will take your advise and try and help him do have more chill out time. Would you ask your husband if he thinks having Gavin "homebound" from school temporarily would be a good idea or not? Thanks

hi sara, i don't have a child that has tics, but my husband has tourrets and has many tics. the best advice that i can give you for them (knowing what helps his besides his meds) is to help him stay relaxed. my husband's tics get worse when he's worried or stressed...he finds reading very relaxing and when he's reading he has absolutely no tics at all. i'm sorry i can't help more, but i hope this might help him relieve some of his tics as i know they are very uncomfortable. good luck with everything!
