I have a 6 month old baby boy, and I can't help but worry about safety when he grows up. because of all these kids, drink driving and having accidents. and all the dangerous people out there, that attack people for no reason. am I the only mum that worries about that, do any of you mums out there worry about that to? I just can't help but worry, I see so many things on the new. children these days are taking drugs at young ages. getting into all sorts of trouble, like hoping into cars with drink drivers. I just can't help but stress out everyday, I don't ever wanna let go of my son. but I have to one day and I am worried about his safety. I know I seem like a stress head but he is my baby and I can't help but worry.

I have older kids, and yes, while I worry about them, I have total faith that we have raised them to be sensible, functioning members of society. My step-daughter is currently off in Europe for two months studying and holidaying and doing fantastically, my son is about to get behind the wheel of a car for the first time....honestly, I think as our kids grow older, while we worry, our worries mature with us, and we become a little less of "control freak" and more about setting our children up for success.

I think that if you live in too much fear, and restrict your children too much, you are actually doing them a disservice. Allow them some room while they are young to make mistakes. Allow them to take calculated risks. Don't wrap them in cotton wool. Show them that you trust them, nurture that trust relationship between the two of you, and you will find that your child will be better AND safer for it.

One of the best books I ever read for parenting a teen was "Too Safe For Their Own Good". There are some very interesting points about those kids/young adults who are risk takers and what they are lacking or have too much of in their lives.
