Is there really hope at 40 or over??

[deleted account] ( 4 moms have responded )

I have one son who is 19, I am seriously considering having one more child but I am 40 now and I need one more year (presently studying); do you think taking Maca, Vitex, prenatal vitamins and other natural supplements is a realistic way to prepare my body and increase fertility? Grateful for feedback ladies.....

Well, the fact is, only two in five women who attempt pregnancy over 40 actually succeed. So while minimising stress, eating right, taking supplements, etc, may increase your chances, just remember, your chances are pretty low to begin with. And every year you put it off, you are decreasing those chances, herbal supplements or not. If you are thinking of another child, it appears to me that you are not recognising the urgency of your fertility (or lack thereof) so don't be surprised if in a year, your chances are severely reduced.

The fact is, over 40, you have a reduced egg reserve anyway, all with reduced quality. So herbs and supplements aren't going to change that. I don't mean to be negative, but given you are putting it off, it doesn't appear like you are taking your decreasing fertility particularly seriously. So don't be disappointed if it is a struggle for you if that's what you decide to do.

Jodi thanks for your response, I have visited my doctor and he has indicated that everything seems to be normal with my reproductive system but as I mentioned I am studying and I have some challenging final examinations with this program so it would be quite physically demanding for me to include a pregnancy into the mix; hence the delay of one year. I just wanted the opinion of you guys on the herbs and other supplements to increase my chances. Thanx again

Discuss it with your doctor. You can get tests done these days that can help with these choices. But honestly? The longer you hold off, the less chance you have. You KNOW your chances slim as you get older. If you feel this way, why would you put it off? It's not like you are getting any younger.
