He could be totally fine, but I would have him evaluated asap because not sitting up before a year is definitely not 'normal'. If there's nothing to worry about... they will tell you that. If there IS something to worry about... they will start getting it taken care of.

I typically think of milestones like sitting up as very general guidelines. But this case seems extreme (and please note that I am not an expert or doctor, just another mom). Here is a list of things a child should be doing at different ages. It lists sitting up at 9 months and crawling at a year.

Normally on posts like this I'm prepared to tell mom that "it's normal". But this doesn't sound normal. Like Teresa said, it could be nothing. But if I were you, I'd be worried and go get it checked out soon.

Where do you live? If you are in the US, there is a program in most states called ECI (early childhood intervention) for low cost or a free evaluation for your son. Even though he was 6 weeks early, this is not the norm. My kids were LATE bloomers and didn't sit up until they were 9 months old, and crawled at 10 months old. Both were walking at 13 and 14 months. It's better to see what's up (if anything) now to get the issues addressed. Good luck.
