My son is diagnosed with ADHD. We have been on Concerta for about 2 years now. He is really struggling in school. Now he is in 3rd grade and he isnt making much progress. The doctor suggested the last few time we went that he be put on a higher dose. I finally decided to up his dose from 18mg to 36mg. His teachers say he is more focused and doing better. The probem is I have noticed that he is nervous about certain things. He has been asking and talking a lot about me dying. He asks when will I die and what will he do. He even said if I die then he wants to kill himself so that he can be with me in heaven. He has been very focused on death. He has asked me questions like this in the past but now he seems more consumed with these thoughts. Last night he couldnt even fall askeep because he was so consumed with fear of sleeping alone. Has anyone else seen this large increase in anxiety when your child is on Concerta??

Yes, my son is 10 and was on Concerta for 2 years. He handled it well for a long time and was even on 36mg like your son. He got to where he was really depressed and crying all the time. He even pulled back his fist to punch me and that is not like him at all. We stopped his Concerta that day and by the next day he was back to normal. He also already had an anxiety issue that his medicine helped with, but once he stopped the concera his anxety level skyrocketed! It was so bad that he was too scared to go into a room alone. He started to see a Therapist once a week and it has helped a lot. He also switched to just taking 2mg of Intuniv every night. He is a lot happier and so am I because I got my son back and his grades are improving. :) my advice is to switch medicine and have him talk to a therapist. The therapist won't think he's nuts to be so focused on death and will be able to give him some coping strategies and find out why he is so focused on death. Also I'm not sure what religion you are or if you go to church, but it really helped mine cope with the idea of death so that he isn't always focused on it anymore.

Rachel,

Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate you sharing your experience with me. Its so tough to find the right medication and dosage. I just want him to be happy and have his personality, but be able to focus and succeed in school!
