I have a 2.5 year old daughter and a 2 month old son. I recently started babysitting two boys--one just turned 4 and one will be 4 in June. They are very rambunctious and not very good at listening/following directions. I am interested in thoughts about the difference between boys and girls at this age........I want to teach them to be respectful and to listen, but I also want to allow them to be boys. I don't want to force them to be as calm as my daughter or to behave just like her because I realize there are differences simply because of gender. I'm not sure how much their behavior is a result of being boys and how much is just from a loose structure at home.

SO, what have you noticed are the major differences in the way boys and girls act during the preschool years? What have you found that you need to do differently in discipline with boys and girls? Any thoughts are appreciated!!

Boys need structure and to be kept busy. Drawing/art projects, building things, anything to keep the little hands busy. You are right, they are a whole different animal! Some of it is a loose structure, but alot of it is the personality they are born with. My brother was the youngest with 3 older sisters. He was more hyper than us, but still pretty calm for a boy. I have also seen a girl with lots of brothers jump off things and rough house. I think being organized and having a routine they can depend on is key. Seems like alot more work, but in the end, it'll keep you from pulling your hair out. Good luck to you!
