Keeping a 1st grader focused at school

Ok parents, I need some advice!! My son has been good all year, however, we are having some difficulty (for about the last month) with him staying focused and completing his work at school. He is just NOT doing it when there are other children around, but when the other children leave to go do something else (P.E., or whatnot), he gets his work done just fine. His teacher and I have been trying different tactics to motivate him, such as accountability (he calls me when he completes his work and we reward him accordingly) in addition to a reward system (starting with small things and over time, working up to bigger things), and each of these have worked for a day or two, then fizzled out. He gets upset if he doesn't get a reward for doing his work, but it isn't enough of a motivator to get him to do his work. We have made his bedtime earlier thinking that maybe he wasn't getting enough sleep, and that hasn't helped. I'm really having a hard time with this and need some advice from any parents that have maybe had this kind of issue with their children before.

I have the opposite problem. My daughter does this at home. Maybe he is just getting too much stimulation. Maybe he needs a place of his own to do his work at. The school year is almost over, and things are getting harder. It may just be overwhelming to have all of that noise. Ask the teacher if maybe he can go to the library to do his work and continue the rewards!

The rewards are so important. If they mean that much to him, he really IS trying.
