At this age children are still making sense of their world and how they fit into it. They have a sense of security through consistency and a certain amount of predictability.
Possibly big changes in life such as moving and being in an unfamiliar situation can cause anxiety. Not knowing what others expectations of them are increases the anxiety. This would be increased more if there are communication differences between daycare and home both in language and culture. Even non verbal communication such as facial expression or whether a person looks at you when you speak may be different in different cultures. While adults may understand these things a child this age may feel lost alone and anxious when in this situation. Some adults may not understand this and expect a certain behaviour without having a lot of life experience. If your son is experiencing anxiety in daycare it is possible that he is requiring extra security at home or has become more anxious that he will be separated from you and so is even more attached to you at home.
Have the staff at daycare helped you with suggestions on how to help with the changes your child may be experiencing? Is there anywhere you can get advice and support in your community - perhaps mothers or grandmothers that share your language and culture. Is there another daycare that may suit your child better?
If you don't mind me asking , which part of Australia are you in?
