Kindle versus other tablets

We are thinking about getting our 11 yr old son a Kindle Fire as a graduation present, thinking it might help him stay organized in middle school. Does anyone have any opinion on tablets versus the Kindle?

Ijust bought a Sony Tablet S and l love it. It uses Android and there's a lot of free apps available including organizational and ereader (Sony ereader is preinstalled) but there are a ton of games as well so it may end up being more of another gaming system than a educational tool.

I love my Kindle Fire, but...a Kindle automatically connects to the Amazon account (and credit/debit card) it is registered to, so this might be something of a problem for you if you want to supervise and or limit/restrict the amount of money he spends on books or apps. It's also a security risk if the device is stolen; I'm not sure I'd want to trust it in the hands of an eleven year old for that reason.

Also, it's primarily an e-reader, not an organizational tool. Whilst he might read more if he uses it, he also might get MORE distracted by the other stuff on it, not less.

I LOVE my Kindle fire. I have that, and my husband has an IPad. I personally like the Kindle better because it was cheaper and its easier to tote around.
