Hi everybody! We are so eager to set our kids on the way to acquire knowledge. But the other day I read an article by Waldorf net works. They believe strengthening the foundation of the mind like peace and happiness is more important than stimulating the thinking skills before its apropriate time.I now fully agree with this.Nobody taught me colors and shapes when I WAS VERY YOUNG,I started school&formal learning at 7,But never the less, these abstract concepts like color we developed by observation.A happy cozy atmosphere with lots of sensorial exploratio is what is needed by children upto 6 years of age. What do you people out there think

Evelyn ,nice of you to reply.Yes.Children need all kinds of emotions. We should not over protect them.Yes.learning start from the moment we are born. But this learning is a natural way of observation, play and listening to people's words and activities going around.Children learn to speak, walk, etc this way and ths is the most natural way.Learning is not induced.Adults should refrain from coming in between nature and the child's learning by instructing and inducing teaching. This should come after the first 6 years of age.We provide a vibrant environment where children explore experience and learn,an environment of loving care and security.A place where they can play with lot of materials, meet children, run and jump and exercise, where unwanted behavior is gently modified. Why should we rush with writing and reading so early.Learning/teaching letters and numbers can wait till the child's 6th year. Not burden their young mind .Yes I have children and I am a grand parent and a preschool teacher and correspondent..Thank you Evelyn

I agree to a point on this. But you can not be completely happy and so on. It is not a perfect world. Kids need to experience other emotions besides happiness to learn to grow and handle those emotions and such. You directly teach a child from the moment they are born. Do you have kids?

Thank you Evelyn for your reply.Ofcourse you are right,I agree with you. Actually when we think of our childhood days ,it is the happiness that we felt with our friends and playing was the most fulfilling aspect. We learnt to socialize, give and receive directions, make friends, all in a very natural way through play, independent of adult directed activities.May be we can call this indirect learning. At very young age the need for peace and love is more important for the growth and strengthening of our mind, This energy should not be taken up or distracted by our intellect. This emotional and physical well being should be the basic foundation on which knowledge is built.Once the mind is completely happy and settled stimulation in the form of direct learning can take place.

ACtually, sensory is okay but its not the only stimulation children need up to age 5. THey also need to be able to explore with their minds as well. In play they learn to deal with problems and to handle them, they learn to socialize which is also important to a growing mind, they also learn academic things in a natural setting. Just sensory is not enough. They need all things stimulated. That has been proven for over 100 years.
