Where are you from? What exactly did your granddaughter record that could be helpful?

Just because it was cloudy, doesn't mean it wasn't hot. You said your windows were all down then you said the 10 year old could have rolled them down. I'm assuming you live in a crime-free neighborhood to leave all your doors unlocked as well.

I used to let my daughter and step-son stay in the car for a few minutes when they were about 10 and 8 or so. But, not in extreme temps because they had to keep the doors locked and could only roll the windows down part way. They also had my cell phone to call 911, if need be. We lived in a bigger city then.

It just seems like now-a-days, you're asking for trouble by leaving small children and infants unattended in a car. As Jodi pointed out, your 10 year old is not equipped to provide the necessary care under those kind of circumstances for her 3 year old sister. Quite frankly, you are lucky they are not your kids because in some places, Child Protective Services could have taken them right out of your custody there and then.

The law depends on where you live. I wouldn't have been concerned about the 10 year old, but leaving the 3 year old probably wasn't very good judgement. Even though I used to leave my older child in the car sometimes when he was about that age, I would never have left my daughter with him (they are 7 1/2 years apart).

Just remember that a 10 year old may be able to roll down the windows if they are uncomfortable, but a 3 year old will overheat and dehydrate much more quickly than a 10 year old, so there is no way the 10 year old could necessarily make that judgement on behalf of your 3 year old.
