Letting your 6th grader go out to a public place alone.

So here's a question. Just looking to see what other parents do. First let me say we do not allow our 6th grader to go out anywhere in public alone. With that being said... what are you're opinions?

Our 12 year old daughter seems to think we are going to keep her locked in a tower until she's 18 - mostly because we don't let her do a lot of things her friends are doing. Seeing PG-13/R movies, go to the skating rink with no parents, go to the mall with no parents. I just think it's crazy that parents let their kids do that at such a young age.

What do you think?

Oh i don't think it's crazy to walk home alone from a bus stop - we do that now and have been for awhile. I can agree with 13 or 14. But these kids that i have been hearing about have been doing it since 5th grade!

Me, my kids watch movies for PG (which here in Australia is Parental Guidance under 15). My 8 year old watches some M movies, depending on the content of the movie. As for being on her own in a public place, no. My kids were probably about 13 or 14 before I allowed that.

Crazy? I don't agree. I was walking home from school on my own at the age of 8. That's being alone in public.
