No, Florida is not the "worst" (I'm a teacher in Hillsborough County). We're towards the middle of the ranking. Alabama and Mississippi usually hover near the bottom (this is not an insult toward those states, just fact based on data). New York is among the highest, but honestly if you are involved in your child's education and make sure he/she gets the best out of it, they'll do fine.

I'm not sure how they are now but when I was in high school there were two types of degrees/diplomas you could earn. One was your standard high school diploma and the other was a NYS Regents diploma. A student had meet specified criteria, such as taking additional classes and maintaining a certain GPA, in order to graduate with a regents diploma. Back then, they were well respected on college applications.

I do have a couple of friends that teach there now and they have had it up to their eyeballs with new testing requirements and budget cuts. They've mentioned smaller schools having to cut music programs and/or art programs and in most schools there are fewer choices for electives. My friends are in Northern NY.

Here is a link for the NYS Dept of Education. You can just click on it right from here. There is a crap load of information you can find when you have time to wander around the site and it's many links. Good luck!

it is a link that takes you to the top 5 states for education and the 5 worst.... florida did not make it to the best or the worst, but new york DID make it to the best.... but i've heard that new yorkers are not the the people of the south with our southern hospitality and such... they are more mind their own business type... texas did not make it to the best or worst category but my kids school is very good, and they are I wouldn't move for the WORLD, i love being close to family... family is VERY important to me.
