My 2-1/2 year old is not letting my newborn sleep because he is so loud (always screaming, jumping, banging...). It hurts my heart that I am always telling him "stop running, stop banging, stop screaming, stop jumping, shhh...). But I just dont know what else to do. He gets mad and somewhat jealous when I am holding the baby but when he is crying because his big brother wont let him sleep when he's tired I have to try to rock him to help him sleep. My toddler also refuses to take a nap so this is an all day thing and I have a pretty cranky baby.

Instead of trying to make your toddler quite.....change how you have your newborn sleep. Babies will sleep through an amazing amount of noise. My daughter once slept straight through a fire engine siren at a parade that went off right in front of us....and her hearing is amazing.

To help your newborn sleep put him or her in a bedroom for naps and close the door....this shuts out much of the noise already. You can get a baby monitor to put in the room, so you can still hear what baby is doing. Then also get a sound machine that plays white noise or the sound of a fan.....this is a consistent noise that will lull him/her to sleep and also helps drown out any other noises.

For the 2 yr old do a quite time at the same time everyday. For quite time it could be done a couple different ways....one way you can have 2 yr old stay in his room playing with quite toys or reading/looking at books for a certain amount of time....1/2 hr, 1 hr. Or you can put on a movie....he has to lay still and not move around or talk while the movie is on. This gives the 2 yr old down time and if he/she is tired they will most likely fall asleep.

Listen to Sarah!

Me and my friend (whom I met in a mommy group who has 3 kids, 8mths,24mths, 36mths) we do the exact same thing that Sarah does every day.

I have 8mth old and a 36month old.

Sarah, I could not have said it better myself.

My advice exactly. This is what I do every day.

I have a 3yr old and a 8 month old.

Great info.
