Low IQ

My son has a very low IQ of 61 but socially is able to cope in school, he is also a great athlete. We adopted him after being abused and neglected by my husbands brother. So the experts don't agree on his expectations. Does anyone have any insight?

It is very common for kids that have been subject to abuse to have one area that they are below in and one area where they are above in. This will probably be true for the rest of his life. This does not mean he can't be a functional adult, but it will mean he will have challenges. As far as expectations, no one really knows what the future holds. What I often times tell families is prepare for the worst and hope for the best. You have to be prepared for the worst as if that does happen you need to have a plan and be able to help him through it. Meet him where he is at and help him to do the best that he can.
