I did what Shawnn and Jodi mentioned. My son could be perfectly content (or even sleeping) and as soon as the water would go on he would start screaming... but I'd just keep talking to him and peeking out at him... and just getting the minimum done as fast as possible. No harm done.

I used to take my kids in their bouncer and sit them on the bathroom floor. That way I could chat to them and they could see me while I showered. Either that, or I waited until they had settled for a nap and took 5 minutes to have a shower.

Put baby in carrier on the floor in bathroom.
Baby hears you, gets used to the sounds in the bathroom, and you get clean!

If you're a single mom and there is noone to watch the baby for 5-10 minutes... you can put the baby down to nap somewhere closeby(bassinet, crib, or a playpen) and just take a bath, so you could hear if they woke up. (If that would make you feel more comfortable)
