My general rule is a protein, a grain or starch, and a vegetable at each meal. My son was OK with complex flavors at that age, so don't be afraid to experiment. One of our favorite meals is Cooking Light's fish tacos: http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/fish-tac... It's fast, healthy, and easily customized to your own tastes.

I agree, offer the same foods that the rest of the family is eating. That way the whole family will be eating healthy. Don't worry if he doesn't eat everything. If you keep trying to find things that he likes when he turns up his nose at something, you are going to turn into a short order cook. After 12 months, children's appetites decrease because they are no longer growing as fast as they did during that first 12 months. Remember most babies triple their birth weight by 12 months, and average around 22 pounds. If they tripled again the second year you'd have a very large 2 year old. Because they are not growing as fast, they also have a decrease in their appetite, and it seems sometimes like they are not eating a thing. If you get worried and try to find something that he likes each time, or give him milk or juice just to get him to eat something, then you are not allowing him to be in tune with his body's hunger and satiety signals. I usually say offer milk at meal time after solids, have a small healthy snack (fruit, cheese, yogurt, etc.) halfway between meals in the high chair and offer water for thirst between meals and your child will get proper nutrition. He'll usually pick one meal that he likes the best and just pick at the others, that's ok. Give him about 15-20 minutes to and then let him out of his high chair and wait until the next scheduled feeding time to offer healthy food again. Its your job to offer healthy foods (regular table food) and his job to decide how much to eat. He'll eat when he's hungry, don't worry. Any food is okay except for those that could cause choking like nuts, popped corn, whole or sliced hot dogs (diced is okay), whole grapes and big chunks of meat like steak.
