How effective is it? How many people get pregnant on it? And did you personally have any issues with it?

Mirena is something women either love or hate. I've had it twice now and I love it. I don't get a period at all this time. As far as preventing pregnancy it did its job the first time for the 3 years I had it in. This time I'm single but I still don't have a period.

It does lower your sex drive alot, but this way you have to take pills or use a condom. I had it for 5 years and didnt really have any other side effects. Since i took it out my sex drive is back and back to normal. Its a sure way of not getting pregnant to me.

I currently have the Mirena, I love it, I haven't had any out of the ordinary side effects but the side effects are use individually specific. My period went from being a heavy 7 day flow to a moderately low 2 day flow. If you have an awesome OB/gyn then the chances of the Mirena moving are little to none, the only con I could think of is it does lower my sex drive a lot.

if you do get preggers with it the IUD has to be taken out. There is no option on that it will also cause you to miscarry.

Hi there
I had the mirena IUD in after I had my son and I had terrible side effects. If you want my opinion I'm strongly against it and would ask you to do some research on it and its side effects to make sure this is the birth control for you.
Some of the side effects I had were:
Weight gain
Hallucination
Heavy bleeding for a while after
Bad cramping
Extreme mood swings
Depression
My psoriasis got 200% worse
Fingers and face swelling
No sex drive
Hair growth where it shouldn't be

That's just off the top of my head. I was a miserable person and couldn't stand to be with myself.
I know not everyone has the same side effects and I'm not trying to scare you, I hope this helped.

I had received an IUD in 2001 2 years after my 2nd child, my sister- in law told me about it. I visited my dr we talked i got it in, no where in the conversation was i told to come back for hormone therapy, what i was told is that i wouldnt get pregnant for up to 5 years and I could remove at anytime and lastly that when i had sex the guy couldnt feel it. WRONG..... one night during sex my baby daddy said it felt like something sharp was scratching his well you know, so at that point i started thinkin the dr was incorrect about a man feeling this inside of me. a few months later I thought I was just having a very long & painful cycle until i decided to talk to my mom about my bleeding and pain. She insisted we go to the dr right away and lord I was pregnant, and then on top of that they asked me when had i been in to get hormone put in the iud? all the long painful bleeding was the miscarriage, in which i felt so bad and I tearfully explained I had not been told i needed to come in for hormone therapy, at that moment i decided it was not for me at all.

my first IUD was inserted in 2008 3 months after my first child born, surprisingly on 9th january 2012 i found out i was pregnant & my IUD was still in place & it never moved until i was in labour, but she is my little Miracle . anyway other than that i had no problem with my IUD not cramps besides for the first 2 weeks after insertion, im period was always regular, no period pain just bloating, and as a matter of fact i inserted it again 6 weeks after i give birth to my baby last year, & itz like itz not even there. i prefer IUD any time

Before u get it please read mirena side effects ( not trying to put u off)
Ive had 2 mirena ius' the first time i had it i bled heavly for 8 months continuisly had to it slowly stopped & got lighter i had it removed 14months later to get preg. I had it put back in at my 6 week check up- it was fine this time really light periods no pains etc, untill a few weeks ago i had a really light period that didnt last long then i started getting painfull backache stabbing pain in my side, headaches, nausea, hightened smell senses. I just ignored it didnt think anything of it untill at my routine smear she couldnt find my strings & told me to make an appointment with my fpc. I did but it was for a week later so i googled my symptoms etc & it was coming up with being pregnant everytime i had a test done & it was negative but now i'm pretty much sure i'm pregnant i had all these symptoms with my daughter & i feel pregnant ( sounds stupid i know) but all the things ive recently read have scared me coz i no it is possible for it to happen. Mirena is perfect for some ppl but others not at all. I hope u find answers that will help u decide 😊

I have had one in for 2 1/2 years and its very effective for me. the only thing for me is that I still get a period it's just much lighter and only last for 3 to 4 days.

No I didn't. I know it is really small. And if I had known it could come out I would have checked for it. You can actually feel it. I know that sounds weird. And I agree with Amy. People either love it or hate it. I think I spotted for 3-4 months after it was put in. That made me not like it since I normally do not have a period til I completely wean my babies. One of the other doctors at the clinic I go to said that she had gotten pregnant with it. But I can't remember what she said about whether it causes it to be aborted or any other complications. It was over 5 years ago. I would ask your doctor. I'm sure more research has been done on it since then.

The first time I had it I continued to get a period it was just much lighter and only lasted 2-3 days, this time around I don't get a period at all. If you get pregnant and it's still I there could be complications such as a miscarriage if they try to remove it but I don't believe it causes birth defects.

Oh my gosh! So you didn't notice when it came out? That worries me because I bleed heavy. Hmm.

I am worried about the no period part, I get really paranoid, but it would be so nice to not have to deal with it. Do you know if I were to get pregnant with it, can it cause birth defects?

After weaning my 6th child at 18 month and having the IUD in place since he was 6wks old I thought I was good to go for at least 4 years. But apparently my 1st menstral cycle after weaning my son was so heavy I expelled it. And I had a beautiful, wonderful daughter a year later. My doctor told me Im her 1st patient to ever expell one. So I suppose if they stay in they might be effective:)
