Hi, we are a family of 3, my husband and I have been married for 25 years and we have one teenage daughter who is 17. There have been a few incidents in the last two years when I have had too much to drink and she has gotten angry at me. When I have a drink at home, a glass of wine or a beer, this bothers her as well . Should I just stop drinking? Or is it a hormonal teenage anger and resentment situation.

I agree with Sarah, she is probably getting mad when you drink, even when you only have a few, because she has no idea whether you are going to stop before you are plastered or not.

If you are drinking to excess often (more than once or twice a year), it is probably a good idea to quit all together, and it does sound like you this is the case. If you feel you can control your drinking, you could just stop drinking around her--if you want to have a glass of wine, take a cab out to an upscale restaurant/bar (they are less likely to let you get totally plastered before cutting you off like clubs or cheap pubs).

I would stop drinking. Personally I think if she is seeing you drink irresponsibly that is not setting a good example for her. That is my guess as to why she is getting mad. She probably feels like she has to parent you in those situations and that is not fair to her. She should never have to parent her parents.....even if it just happened a few times. That is a few times too many.

Thanks Sarah. You have a very good point about the parenting part. I appreciate your comments.
