I told my 8yo dd I was busy and couldn't watch that 124th handstand yesterday. I feel HORRIBLE and can't believe I allowed my end-of-the-day exhaustion say this to her. She was crushed I could tell. How do I make this better and erase that comment from her memory. I am so sick to my stomach and feel like I may have traumatized her. :(

Thanks, Chet MC! As usual I overreacted. I don't think she even remembers it, let alone traumatized her. I think the situation has made me a better mother - made me realize the importance of patience. Yesterday, I smiled and encouraged through 1,000 handstands. (I simply excused myself to take a breather in the bathroom at each 100 mark. :)

What exactly did you say to her?

Parents don't need to be perfect for kids, or be able to fulfil their every request.

When you make a mistake apologise. It's good for kids to see that everyone makes mistakes, and it's good for kids to see how you can own up to your mistakes and start to make amends.

It's also good for kids to learn that everyone has limits. Sometimes people are too tired or too busy to watch you do handstands. Sometimes people get angry or frustrated. You can't shelter kids from the normal range of human emotion, you have to teach them the skills to cope with it.

Just talk to your daughter about how you're feeling and how she's feeling.
