Hi! My son was mostly bedridden during a bout with Mono, (or Epstein Barr) recently. Before we were given a diagnosis, I actually started looking on the net for 'cool' wheelchairs, or something to get him around in. Not only were all wheeled devices made for the handicapped ugly and boring, but the cost was about 3 times more than other things for children- such as strollers- even high quality strollers! My son is 9, so I didn't want to embarrass him by using a stroller.
I would love some feedback from moms on getting new products out there- wheelchairs for all ages that are nice looking, ergonomically correct, and fun for kids to get around in. Why should medical equipment like wheel chairs be boring and purely functional. I saw this as demeaning and lacking care for the quality of life of individuals who need this equipment.
My son suggested a 'fast, dragon style' wheelchair. He's better now, but I certainly got a good glimpse of the drabness associated with this aspect of people's lives, as well as the incredible hike in cost. It almost seemed that the equipment industry was taking advantage of the disabled with cost, too. It's needed-so the price increases?
