This summer has been particularly rough for my 2 yr. old son. The mosquitoes seem to flock to him like bees to honey and since they itch, he scratches. Now his legs look like he's had the chicken pox!!! I've tried insect repellent, cocoa butter, calamine lotion, oatmeal baths, bleach in his bath water, Benadryl, and countless other items that friends and family have suggested. Nothing seems to be effective in stopping the bites and/or the itch! What am I to do???

He may be allergic to mosquito bites. Don't laugh it happens. In which case he'll need something stronger to help him out. Take him to a doctor.

The best thing that has worked for me is dermaplast spray. The blue cap one - not the one with antibacterial stuff. just pain relief.

Skin So Soft was the only thing that worked for my son and the Dr had us put Cortizone cream on to help with itching cause benadryl and calamine did nothing for him.

My oldest son (now 7) has be a mosquito magnet since he was born. Our whole family can be outside and he will be the only one that gets bit....and 10 times. They turn into welt-like bumps and they itch so bad he makes them bleed. At the beginning of the summer a friend intorduced me to a product line and a home concoction. He seriously has not had a mosquito bite all summer. 1 capful of SolUMel, 15 drops of melaleuca oil and the rest H2O in a spray bottle. Spray it on and they stay away! The products are all natural so you don't even have to worry about washing them off at night.

I not 100% sure if this will work but someone has suggested diluting vinegar in equal parts and dabbing it on the bites

also, when I get bites myself, i make an X in it with my nail. It stops the itching.

Put some pants and long sleeve shirts on when he goes outside, and try not to take him out when the bugs are bad.

My son's girlfriend gave me some Witchhazel to rub on after a bite, and it soothed the itch. Another friend told me to rub a raw onion and swore it would take the "bite" out of the itch. I didn't try it, cuz I didn't want to smell like onion and attract the flies too! I used to use fabric softner sheets on my kids when they were little, instead of Skin So Soft and it worked, for the most part. Good luck. ALWAYS avoid being outdoors at dusk!

Witch Hazel works well - it's about a dollar a bottle. Just dab some on the bites and it stops the itch.

One thing is to stop putting all that stuff on your baby. Bleach water? That's a little scary. The best advise is just not to let him outside when the mosquitoes are going to be active and to not let him around standing water etc. He is 2 so it's going to be hard to keep him from scratching. Your best defense is prevention. And you can give him a little benedryl to stop the itch, but ask your pediatrician first.
