From day 1 my mother in has been begging us to watch our now 6 month old child. I'm worried about leaving my child with her because she is old fashion. The crib that she has set up for my daughter, at her house, is a hospital crib that is at least 50 years old. She claims its safe because it was a hospital bed.

Today she was over at our house and we where talking about blanket aren't allowed in the bed.She said that her boys (oldest is 50 and youngest 39) all slept with blankets as babies and are still alive, and that most of the new ideas today are ridiculous (expect car seats) She loves her granddaughter but I'm worried about my daughters safety. On the no blanket in crib, I did explain that it is to help prevent SIDS. Which she thought was ridiculous also.

She has also given my child things, such as plastic bags to play with. Her and my husband think that Im over protective of my baby and they all came out just fine. Any input would be great!!!

Grandparents often think about raising babies they did when we were kids, that all the new "rules" are silly. And sometimes, they are right, sometimes not. But, it is your baby, so she should be expected to follow your rules. Although, maybe you could have some "definites" (no plastic bags) and some flexible ones that you would be okay with if she did her way. Talk to her, even say "I know my husband survived using a blanket, but it would just make me more comfortable if we didn't". You might let her watch the baby at your house, i.e. your crib - and then you & hubby can go out!
The grandparent negotiation can be kinda tough sometimes. Good luck.

Hi I would express your concerns and set ground rules. Be polite but firm. Hopefully she will respect you enough and love her grand baby enough to see you are only protecting your sweet baby. Far as the plastics goes ask her why do they say on them keep out of reach of babies? I do believe its for a reason and the bags state that reason. Good luck.
