My 8 year old boy is not able to memorise his multiplication tables but when I taught him theses with some of the tricks he is doing quite well. But, my concern is that whether memorisation is required or not....which one is more beneficial in long term

Memorisation is important, as this speeds up the process, but he also needs to understand WHY the answer is what it is. This will become more important as he starts to learn other mathematical concepts that build on his times tables.

Many teachers will teach songs are rhymes to learn the multiplication tables. This actually is a good way as you tend to remember better when taught by song or rhyme.
