My 11 year old doesn't want to hang out with friends

My 11 year old son has some friends at school, but he never wants to hang out with them outside of school. He is an only child. He hangs around at home playing games and watching TV. We are signing him up for boy scouts to get him doing activities. How can we encourage him to make lasting friendships and to go out and play?

I have an 11 yr old boy as well. He is the same. He's quiet, and doesn't want friends outside of school hours. For him, he gets enough of their rambunctiousness at school. As long as he is a happy child I wouldn't worry much. It's a hard age for them as they all think they are right and like to argue lol.

As Sarah told, let him do many activities, it's very considerable for him to develop a good way to socialize and to have good experiences to grow up. I missed this a little in my childhood and i think it is needful for every kid or teen.

I have four kids and my third is just a homebody. He is in lots of activities; scouts, soccer, volleyball and basketball as well as volunteering. He enjoys these activities, has friends at school and seems content. He just has no desire to do anything socially with his friends. We don't allow more than 2 hours of screen time per day. He just enjoys being alone and is comfortable with his own company.
As long as your son gets plenty of exercise, fresh air and has friendships at school, I wouldn't push it too hard. Cut down the screen time and he may seek out time with friends on his own.
