I know he can be a great student and do well at school but just chooses to be the class clown and gets really bad grades . Talking to him seems to go in one ear and out the next. He is really smart and mature when he chooses to. How to i help him

Work with the school around consequences. If he is not doing the work in class, have them let you know and he can complete it when he gets home, or he can do it during lunch breaks or afternoon detention. There are plenty of ways he can have some pretty logical consequences to his choices.

Maybe try and give him some incentive to get good grades. It can be a day out of his choice or something similar. It needs to be worth his while though.
You aren't at school with him so there's not a lot you can do. He is choosing his own actions and he's old enough to know that there will be consequences. Dwelling on how it will affect him in the future probably won't help, he's only thinking of the now.
