My 13 year old daughter wants to dye her hair. She has not specified a color, but she has healthy hair and good grades. What is your oppinions? She just got a puppy and I don't want her to become spoiled. Should i allow this? If i should, should I wait?

Also, she argues that most of the girls in her grade either dye their hair or have more piercings than her one lobe piercing. Which, they do. One girl dyes her hair, has 4 ear lobe piercings and a cartilage piercing, and a nose piercing. What are your opinions?

I dyed my hair when I was 12, I turned out just fine. If she wants to express herself with hair dye, I think that's ok. As long as it isn't anything crazy!

I say let her do it. My daughter is 11 and we did some blue and pink highlights over the summer. The color came out quick (in about 2/3weeks) and we were left with some very simple blond highlilghts that look great. I did however make her earn the trip to the salon. We picked a goal ( I think hers was to get a good grade in a certain area of school) and once she did that, I let her get her hair done! Good luck!

it isn't really because all the other kids are doing it, she says she wants to "express herself". She has sort of an artsy personality, so I can see her wanting to put some of that out there, but i don't want her to come across as "trashy". Her style has been going a little bit in the "scene" (at least that's what i have heard it called) direction, and I am a little worried that this would encourage this.

Sorry.... I just read the rest of your post. I would not allow anything just because 'all the other kids are doing it'. If my kid wants to do something for herself and can lay out GOOD reasons other than 'all the other kids get to'... I might consider it, but if that is their main reason... ain't happening. I'm teaching my kids to do what THEY like with their lives... not just what everyone else does.

My opinion on kids/teenagers and hair dye is.... the stuff that washes out easily is fine. More permanent dyes... I'm not ok with them. I do know a couple of girls who have the underside of their hair dyed... and they're 11, almost 12. So really... it's entirely your call here.

I don't think hair color has anything to do with spoiling or not spoiling a kid. ;)
