I stopped breast feeding my son at 4 months & the pooping problems began. His poop got hard & huge. It's horrible. Everytime he poops it's extremely painful for him, I help him by spreading his cheeks & sitting him on the toilet! I have tried everything from changing his diet & milks, suppositories, babylax, vaseline on his butt, etc. His doctor just tells me its normal & to give him fruit & that it's not constipation even tho he goes DAYS w/out pooping (I am in the process of changing doctors). It is not normal for a 15 month old to poop adult size poop (long, hard, thick, extremely smelly) with blood & mucus, & have hemorroides! I just switched him from soy to rice milk & he eats a lot of fruits, no bananas tho & I've tried to keep him on Gerber until recently because it was easy for him to digest. When he feels like pooping he gets scared & cries & screams uncontrollably not just because of the pain but he is traumatized to poop. I don't know what else to do PLEASE help I'm desperate to help him out of his misery so he can poop like a normal baby should :(

Prune juice often helps, if he doesn't like drinking it you could mix it with his cereal instead of milk. Get a new doctor for sure! It's hard to know at this age how much whole grains (like brown rice, wholemeal pasta, multi grain bread etc) they should have. Need Dr's advice here. Kiwi fruit are also good at giving kids a good 'clean out'! Good luck.

I agree with Amanda, cows milk will constipate him. Along with cheese and all dairy. What I always did for our son and still do, he is allowed to have about 12 oz of apple juice a day( I buy the Juicy Juice usually as its 100% juice, water and concentrate) but that is the ticket for our son. That much apple juice keeps him pooping every other day, if not every day. My husbands niece though, she pooped like you described. Have you tried suppositories or ennemas? I know they sound horrible but sure beats him blowing out his little butt to get a poop out. I agree on a new doctor!!!

I hope it's just an allergic reaction to something he's never been on formula so not sure what it could be. He has a doctors appt next Thursday so hopefully we'll get some answers. Glad your son is doing good now :)

Thank you everyone! my son is fine now. The specialist finally told me he had an allergic reaction to formula when i had first switched him to it from breast milk so his stool had been building up and backing his system up. It made the stool hard like a cork, once that stool was out he would poop fine for a few days at most but the he would have that hard pice of stool in no time. And since he realized that it was painful to push and poop he stopped, causing the stool to build up also. He is to be on laxatives for a year to make that behavior stop. Babies cannot get addicted or dependant on laxatives because he is not even aware he is taking them. He just thinks he can poop now without pain. So now he will think it doesn't hurt to poop so i will push. I am not sure your baby has the same but Goodluck!

I know how you feel my son is in the same boat, it seems anything I try works for a few days then it's right back to hard poops and him crying when he has to go. The only thing I find that seems to be working is the Peg that was prescribed for him and even that works selectively. I would demand your doctor send him to a specialist I am in the processes of getting my son into one. So my only advise is to try the Peg if you haven't already and keep bugging your doctor.

He's on rice milk but I haven't cut him off completely of all cow milk products since he eats yogurt, cheese, etc...but I will change that thank you! I will make him have a daily juice from now on too. Yes I have tried suppositories, I actually had to use one last night :/ the poop is like a cork in his butt, but once that first hard painful piece of stool comes out the rest comes out normal its so strange its like that everytime he poops.
