My 17 month old is obsessed with numbers and letters.

He can name almost the entire alphabet!! He recognizes almost all 1-10 numbers. I am sick with worry that he might have autism and some other abnormal behavior. He does smile and has great eye contact. He recognizes his siblings by name and his vocabulary is pretty normal (or a little advanced) for his age. He plays with other toys like trucks, cars, puppets, blocks but not for a long time. He truly prefers to look at the letters and numbers and he can spend a lot of time playing and saying them out loud. He shouts them out wherever we go: grocery store, driving in the car, etc. I haven't mention it to the doctor yet but I will when he has his 18 month check up. Has anyone experience anything similar and what is the outcome? How is your child now? I seriously have lost sleep, appetite, energy over this and keep thinking he might end up with autism. It is very terrifying. Any advice?

My husband was that way as a child with words. He demanded to learn to read at 3 years old and had college level reading skills by 4th grade. I was similar with numbers far more advanced than other kids my age. I don't think your son is showing anything beyond being talented in that area which is wonderful and should be encouraged.

Two out of my three children did this. My son now aged 21 did this and went on to be on the gifted and talented registers through out school. He now speaks 5 languages and is studying a dual degree at university of French and maths.

My three year old daughter did this also and is now reading and doing simple maths. She just loves numbers and reads them on every door we pass and has done so for about 20 months.

Encourage your child to love numbers, this is not autism this is the signs of a smart child that needs to be stimulated.

Totally! Some kids are just drawn to the shapes of numbers and letters- my son (18 months this week) is the sammmmeee way. It's almost annoying, I can't wear any tshirts or sweatshirts with letters on it or he will sit in my lap all day and point them out repeatedly- which i like except I have a 2 1/2 year old to care for also, nevermind day to day stufff to do. bhahaha.

Seriously, some kids are just more fascinated by certain things. I wouldn't worry another moment! My first born wasn't as interested until around 2, and then sucked up all that information and spit it back out at me- knows all his letters and numbers too. My kids were slower in other areas, and stronger in certain areas, like most kids. They find their nitch. :)
