Ditto everyone. Stop feeding him junk. Let him feed himself. Offer him fresh fruits and veggies, yogurt (let him do it... even if it makes a mess... it'll be fun and he'll learn), pasta, anything really... w/ the exception of choking hazards (nuts, whole hot dogs, super chewy meat, etc...) is fine.

Like everyone else has said. Stop buying the junk food. If it's not in the house he can't have it. You started this bad habit so you need to stop it.

He is also old enough to feed himself so let him. My children would hit my hand away if I tried to feed them at that age as well and not because they didn't like the food.

EXACTLY! Stop buying all junk food, and let him feed himself at the table. He is 17 months, not an infant. Feed him all day long varieties of different foods. If your eating habits are poor, his will be also.

Stop feeding him those foods and don't have them in the house. Kids won't starve themselves. He might go a day or two without eating but eventually he'll get the message.

Maybe if you offered him healthy finger foods he could feed himself he would eat it. At this point he should be eating his meals with you. I also would stop buying the junk food, if it's not in the house then he can't eat it.

Do not give him any junk food or let him see it. At that age he should not have been exposed to it anyway. Only offer healthy food choices. If he doesn't eat it he will not starve for missing a meal or 2 and will eventually eat. Maybe let him feed himself. His slapping your hand might be him trying to be independent.

Stop bringing junk food into the house. Then he'll have no choice but to eat something healthy.
