My son had trauma to his front teeth 2 weeks ago. One is now turning grey. The dentist says he needs a baby root canal. I have heard mixed things about this from friends...any advice?

My daughter Mukta fell down and her front teeth broken in the middle and exposed her nerves. I visited to Dentist. he suggested a root canal to be done to save her teeth from infection. so i have taken second option, she also suggested same thing. now i am worried that it and how painful would be this treatment for such a small baby.
any experience person please share your experience...

Thanks for all of the support. They did not mention the papoose just gas and numbing, but I will keep that in mind. I am trying to make it easy for him explaining he will get to pick out a toy when they are finished..he is already making a list. :)

I have worked in the Dental field for 14 years. A baby root canal is pretty common. The only advise I can give you is if they are going to knock him out DO NOT let them put him in a papoose. If they want to papoose him then Do NOT let them knock him out. It is either or in this case. There have been to many children that have died under a Dentist care using both techniques. You do need to get the tooth treated or it can become more infected and affect his immune system and effect the permanent tooth underneath.. He is only Two years if you do pull the tooth he will be without that tooth until he is about 6 or 7 and may cause problems Orthodontically. It will be darker than his other tooth because the tooth will be dead and have no blood supply. I know it is hard when it is your child, but the right thing to do is have it done. The gas will be out of his system 10 after they remove it and the numbing is really not that big a deal. It will last a couple hours. I have never heard of capping a front tooth on a child so young, They will probably fill it where they placed the hole with a tooth composite material. Good luck! Try not to make a big deal about it to your son it will just make him nervous. Just act like you are going in for a routine check up. He will do a lot better. :)

My Goddaughter did the same thing and the dentist just pulled the tooth. I would get a second opinion just to make sure that is the right thing to do in his circumstance. Good luck!

It doesn't hurt when he eats, just when I brush his teeth. They initially told me he wouldn't need to even be numbed...I almost freaked. So now we will use a little gas and numb him up. I guess with a baby root canal they just drill a hole and get the nerve out and fill up the tooth. They did tell me they could use white. They said the tooth would still look grey though. I asked what would happen if we just left it alone...could abscess and affect the permanent one behind it. Still wondering about a second opinion.

I agree with the white caps. I know of several who have the silver and they get really aware of it as they get older and before they start losing their teeth.

Daugther had simlar problems with two front teeth, The meds are horrible. They said as the drug started working she'd get violent and she did then she had to be straped down on a back board to prevent her from hurting herself. Find out ahead of time if there's different ways to medicate him before you go in. also they should leave teeth in with caps so other teeth that are beside them or will be beside them don't grow in wrong. also check to make sure they will be caping with white not silver we were told at last minute while she was being worked on that they wanted more money. Good luck knowledge is the key

I'd ask about a second opion. That seems a bit extrem. Why won't they just pull it? They have to knock him out for the procedure. With it turning grey that means its dead. Is it hurting him now?
