My 28-month Son is not speaking

My Son is 28 months old and uses very few words. He says apple, hi, star, dog, light, and that's about it. He doesn't say "Mama" or "Dada" and really concerns us. He doesn't always respond when his name is called but does seem to have a good understanding of what we say to him. He uses signs for the words More, Thank you, please, Help, open, etc. He waves and blows kisses. He's very affectionate. He has picture books and can identify dozens of objects consistently but wont make an attempt to say them. He plays well with other kids, plays well with his toys and has been involved in Early Childhood intervention twice a week at our home since he was 18-months old. He also goes to Children's House at Baylor for clinical speech therapy for the past 6 months. 4 days a week of help and I feel frustrated because he still doesn't really use any words. His hearing has been checked 3 times by Pediatric ENTs so we've ruled out hearing. I was given a "Sensory" test and he didn't fit any of the criteria. I asked his therapist about Apraxia and she said if it's Apraxia, there are other issues along with apraxia. No one gives me any answers. It seems like everyone is afraid to say because they are unsure.... It sure worries us! I just wish I had some answers. I feel like all of the thousands of dollars I've spent on therapy are netting ZERO dividends but I do everything I can to help figure this out....

I would ask your team whether there is a regional center in your area. I did a quick search and it seems there is Development Pediatric Services in your area. Here is California all of the main services offered thru the state are called Regional Centers. Dallas may be a whole different matter.

I totally get what you said about being upset about watching other children with speech. My SIL complains about how much her 2 darling girls talk and that it drives her crazy and I just want to bonk her on the noggin. I so get it!!!

I noticed Dallas has tons of services and that is such a great thing. Many kids with speech delays can benefit from ABA (Applied Behavioral) or PRT (Pivotal Response Therapy) and these are taught through the services available to you In Dallas. We are both blessed to be living in states that offer services. There are so many families that are not at all so lucky.

Let me know if you have any questions. Take care and remember to take time for yourself.

Thanks Jennifer! I'm not familiar with a Regional Center. How would I locate one? I do think my Son gets everything he needs without saying a word and at the same time, we do try to get him to "use his words" to ask for things. He always signs for them. I initially worried that he might be somewhere on the spectrum due to his language processing issues but the more I test, the more I feel like it just doesn't align. We have a diligent team working with him... I just find myself getting upset when I see kids half his age talking. I appreciate your support. I live near Dallas so we have lots of resources but I'd like to know how I would go about finding a regional center. I'm not done exhausting my efforts yet, although sometimes I feel like I should be! ha! Thanks again... and thanks for the prayers!

Hello Dawn. I joined this site just moments ago and your post was the first thing I saw as I logged in. My have been a sign. You have done all the right things. You have been diligent about having the correct services involved. You have been aware, you have listened and you have been a good Mommy.

Do you have access to a regional center? I dealt with this with my oldest son. The regional center provided education for me to learn how to help my son. I learned a ton and his speech improved.

For whatever reason, sometimes our kiddos have it too easy and are not motivated to speak. This was the case with my son. I learned a lot and I am so thankful.

Comforting prayers to you. You are doing a great job!
