My son is very similar i know how you feel. I can usually tell ahead of time about when naptime will be usually about 3hrs after he wakes up in the morning he needs a nap, so I make him a bottle nd if that doesnt put him to sleep I play his Baby Einstein Around the World Marquee Music toy it is his favorite then I stand up nd rock him to sleep if that doesnt work nd I am going absolutly insane with the screaming I put him in the stroller nd go outside that usually stops the screaming nd he falls asleep.

I agree with Kate, sleep promotes sleep so if he is not getting enough sleep then he will be less likely to want to sleep if that makes sense, get him into routine and hopefully he will settle down, for advice on appropriate routines for your aged baby have a look at Tizzy Hall's Save Our Sleep she has a website and also a book out and she is brilliant. At your little ones age he should probably not be awake for any more then 3-4 hours at a time so if he is awake for longer periods then that then his probably very over tired and once you get him on a good routine you'll probably find that he'll even sleep better at night for you, good luck :)
