My 3 1/2 yr old won't tell me when he needs a wee!

My lil man is almost 3 and a half, he's confident and clever, yet can I get him to stop wetting himself...no! We can have an almost dry day if I am persistently putting him on the toilet every 40 mins or so, yet this has been for 5 months now, and I don't seem to be getting anywhere. We have tried the reward charts, we have tried taking away something (ie. no chocolate treat that evening), he's even told us himself that "Big Boys use the potty." We have had lots of discussions about it, even read all the stories, but we don't seem to be getting anywhere and it's starting to get me down. We have had the odd few days where he's been great, and we couldn't have praised him any more and he was so happy with that, yet a day later and back to square 1.
On the other hand, I can't fault him for going for a poo, it's never been an issue and he's always told us in plenty of time. Is there anybody else out there struggling with this? All my mum-pals are telling me how amazing their little ones are doing and I feel like we're going backwards! Any tips would be more than welcome...please!
Thanks in advance

Thank you for your response, it's not the bed times that are a problem yet (we haven't even began to tackle that one!) The problem is all through the day at the minute, I was waiting until he had grasped that before taking on the nights!
I think i've just had a particularly bad weekend with him and just unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel at the minute, but thank you!

i have a six year old boy who still wets the bed but yet my 2 year old is dry, my son started out with night terror at an early age and now he has grown out of it and just sleep walks. i don't know if this has connection to him wetting the bed. however all i do is do not allow him a drink an hour before bed and make him go to the toilet before he gets in bed. some nights he is dry and others he is wet. we don't tell him off as its not his fault. remember your boy is only three some are slower than others at bed training. i have 8 kids and they are all different. he will get the idea eventually hun :)
