My 3 yr old id holding in his poop

My 3 yr old is holding in his poops and I don't know what to do. He will hold it for a week and when he finally does go it hurts him and he cries, thus creating a vicious circle of no pooping and crying! We try to explain to him that the more he poops the less it will hurt but that hasn't helped. I know he's not constipated because I can see him doing a little "no poop" dance when he has to go. I've tried prune juice and puree, lots of fruit, he drinks lots of fluids and is not constipated but just wont poop. Also tried tummy massage to help loosen and get things moving and that seemed to help only on one occasion.
I think it all started when we started potty training. My husband put too much pressure on him to go on the potty and now he just refuses. We've stopped potty training because he obviously isn't ready. There has been no pressure to go on the potty for a month now but he still wont poop.
I know that coffee works for adults but do you think it's ok to give my son just a small (very very small) cup? I'm out of ideas and can't stand to see him in pain.

I would first start with the natural stuff.....prunes, prune juice, applesause, Bran muffins.....things that are high in fiber. I know he is 3 yrs. so it can be hard to control what he actually eats. If that is not working I would talk to your doc. My daughter was doing the same thing only she was 9 months old at the time. What my doc. had suggested doing was doing 1/4 of the dosage of Miralax daily. It took about two days and then it worked. We continue to do the Miralax still today to keep her stools soft......when we stop it goes back to it being hard and painful.
