My 4 1/2 year old son is afraid to sleep alone

I am a single mom of a beautiful 4 1/2 year old Boy. His Father is a part of of his life. I have always laid down with my son to soothe him to sleep, and he has slept through the night in his own bed, however, the past 3 weeks, my son wakes up crying and screaming not wanting to sleep alone, that he needs me. On Labor day Weekend, his binkie went to binkie heaven, he did a good job transitioning, just 2 days, he also went to Pre School, and his father recently had a baby, can these 'issues' be a reason? While my sleep is irrelevant at this point, for my son he needs to sleep for independence, growth and development. I have tried the super nanny way, I just struggle with his tears and crying and feel horrible when he begs. How much tough love or not do I do? His father "has other things to worry about other than our son sleeping at night"; 2 homes, 2 sets of rules, but this cant go on...any suggestions or advice. I feel horrible for my son and the 'guilt' consumes me especially when he says "why can't I have you sleep with me" or "I dont want to be alone"; I have never left my son, help?

it's time to play detective! go in his room in the dark with flash lights and find the things that bother him... ask him "what scares you when you are in here?" perhaps its noises, perhaps its the shadows. maybe he needs a "white noise" machine or perhaps it would help if he had a CD that would continuously play bedtime music, maybe that would help drown out scary noises
