My 4 year old started a fever last Monday, croup had been going around at daycare. Wednesday we called the pediatrician and they said to see if she got better but they normally don't see a child for a low grade fever, friday she wasn't better, still kept getting a fever and has become really lethargic. The pediatrician saw her Friday and said she had pneumonia, they prescribed antibiotics, told us to continue treating her all weekend with Advil or Tylenol to help her discomfort and to keep trying to get her to eat. She's eating ok, she's not coughing as much but still is, I don't know if she still has a fever because we've been giving her medicine to help, and she's still pretty run down which is expected I guess. The dr said if she's not better monday to call and get her back in, has anyone else's child had pneumonia and how long was it before you saw great improvement?

It can take up to two weeks after antibiotics start working (within 2-3 days) before you may see significant improvement.

If it seems that she's 'stalling out' at some point, has improved, but doesn't seem to be improving more, especially if you've run the antibiotic course, then she would need to go back in for evaluation.

If she is on antibiotics for it, you should see some level of improvement (even if only small) within 2-3 days of taking the antibiotics. That doesn't mean she would be better, just that there should be some level of improvement. However, for a significant level of improvement with pneumonia, it can take longer. It sounds like you are seeing improvement, so I'd keep giving her the antibiotics and see how it goes in another couple of days. If at any point she is not improved, or appears to be worse, get her straight to your doctor.

Sorry, maybe i didnt write so understandebly. What i read on the german pages were that lots of parents whos child had pneumonia said their children werent so fit for about 2-3 weeks.. But kept the child at home for 3-4weeks.They all wrote about the children getting something to inhale as a treatment. Hope it makes sense and that its helpful.

How long must she take antibiotics? I read it up on a german page where moms were talking about their children staying at home for 3-4 weeks but the last week the child was doing ok. And getting treatment to inhale. Is your daughter getting something to inhale? I hope she gets better soon!! Good luck

LOL...I kind of expected that answer, hon!

Been busier than a one legged man...I think you know the rest. ;-) But, since my kids are on the other end of the age spectrum, it's not so much 'kid busy' lately as 'everything ELSE busy'...

Hope the kids bounce back soon. RB had it when he was just 2...that was scary

Thanks ladies she's much better, now my 8 year old has it. I had no idea it was contagious but my ex husband has it too. The kids go back in a couple of weeks to make sure everything is all set!
