My 4 year old is suddenly afraid to poop on the toilet!

My 4 year old used to poop on the toilet every time until about 2 months ago, when he decided he was suddenly afraid to poop on the toilet. He will hold it in every day, sometimes crying and yelling about how his butt hurts, until bedtime when he gets a diaper (he still wets the bed and since he still fits his sister's diapers, I use those instead of expensive pullups). Every other day he wakes up with poop. I ask him why he won't go on the toilet anymore, and why he's scared, and he replies "I can't tell you" or "I pee in the toilet" as if that's enough. Nothing has changed in the household, so stress shouldn't be the issue. His sister recently started doing very well potty training and wears underwear during the day as well, so my thought that he might want to act like her is kind of cancelled out. I don't have a clue where to go from here so any advice would be appreciated.

I would try to talk to him. Like while playing with him on the floor. No pressure here talk to him like your not worried. Talk to him about your day, as him about his. if you have any similar bathroom stories that where you were afraid to poop (public :p) a would be great. Then ask him if he remembers a time when he was afraid to poopmaybe that will help him open up. That's the goal getting him to open up. No secrets with mommy. If not, you need to seek help from his ped. That's waste you don't want him holding that in any longer than he has to. Hope this helps!

Also if he resists a little tell him your concerned that he's worried about going poop in the toilet and it's very good to talk about it.
