My 4 year old son cries all the time at school. He began Pre-K this past September and I was not told until November that he cries all the time in class because he does not want to do what everyone else are doing. I went to observe him at school, the times that the teacher says he cries the most and that is when he arrives in the classroom and going to lunch. He has never been in a daycare setting, he has always been with me or my husband. He is the only child and the youngest in the family so he gets all of the attention. I asked him why does he cry in school and he tells me that he tries not to cry. I am so lost because I don't like leaving him at school. I have an appointment scheduled for him to see a Developmental Specialist. Has anyone else experienced this? And if so, help!

Yeah, my stepson was the same. He was "legally" at minimum school age (and one of the younger ones), but he honestly wasn't ready, so he was held back another year. He is now going into Year 11 and has done superbly. But he may have struggled if we had agreed to him attending school when he wasn't ready. And keep in mind that pushing a kid who isn't ready for school yet can actually damage any kind of positive feeling they have about school. You want your child to have positive interactions at school so they can be motivated....too many negative interactions can damage a child.

i agree, he may just not be ready for school . When is his birthday? Is he one of the younger kids? If not, he may need an extra year. I am a school nurse and I had a first grader who had completed half-day Kindergarten, he licked everything in his area. Everything! Door handles, desk, the walls and even his neighbors. His parents were open to him repeating K and the problem resolved. It was decided the stress of full day school was to much for him, he had an august bday and just missed the cutoff.

Awe poor baby. I went through the same thing with my son. It was torture. He really needed the socialization for kinder so he had to stay in. It took him a couple of months until he was fully adjusted, but would have break downs every now and again. Mostly his was during drop off.

It may just be a case of him not being ready for school. Boys, in particular, mature a little later and aren't always ready at this age for a school setting.
