My 4 month old daughter has just developed a phlegmy cough but has no fever. We have been staying with my mother since july 27th as I recouperate from surgery. She coughs a little trhough out the day but I attribute that to her constant drooling. Now at night and a little during her naps her cough sounds as though she needs to hack up a loogie. It doesn't seem to be interupting her sleep but as for me I look like the living dead. I gave her a warm bath tonight and massaged baby vics into her back and chest. She isn't running a fever so no baby tylenol. Also, her breathing seems to be just fine. She is eating well and is still very playful and happy. She really doesn't start to cough until she has been asleep for about 6 hours. This is my first baby and it makes me very nervous. She has her 4 month check up Tuesday, should we wait until we see the doc then or should we go now? Any help would be appreciated. Also, my 5 year ols niece has had a phlegmy cough but her mother and mine says it's b/c of her allergies so I don't think that my baby caught anything from her.

Thank you for your imput. I am going to try that. She also has a doctors appointment tomorrow and I am going to ask about it. She was good today. She was happy but a little more tired then usual. But she is going potty just fine and eating and so on. Again, thank you!

It could be as simple as a cold or something worse. But if she's happy and no fever it's probably something simple. If you have heating or an air conditioner on in the house it can cause this. As she is sleeping and breathing through her mouth. It tends to dry out the throat and then you get the phlegm. I'd suggest putting a sourcer of water up on a shelf or mantle piece and putting a couple of drops of eucalyptus in it. I did that because both my kids and I were having this trouble. Not only does it stop the air drying out so much the eucalyptus is soothing and helps get with getting the phlegm up. Baths help I would also just take my daughter in the bathroom with me whilst I was having a shower that would help with the phlegm too. I will still talk to the doctor though to rule out any other problems.
