My husband and i have not seen our 5yr old son with an erection. I asked him this morning if his penis ever gets hard and he said "no". He is not circumcised , has had regular check ups and is very healthy. My husband and nanny both say that my son had them when he was a baby, but very infrequently. is this normal?

I understand completely how you feel. I can not remember a time that I have ever seen an erection on my youngest son. This is a concern of his grandfather (as we live with my parents) as he has also mentioned never seeing one. Now it is all possible that he has, and we have never see it, because contrary to what some of these other moms seem to think, we don't spend an excessive amount of time staring at my son's penis. My son also goes through regular check ups and is healthy as well, but I think that I might mention my concern at his next doctor's visit, just to make sure I am not missing anything that could be corrected now, so he doesn't have a problem later in life. My hope is his doctor will tell me its completely normal! Hope this helps, if nothing else, at least you know someone else has the same concern as you!

My boys are 13 and 16 and I don't know that they have ever had erections. Well, in the last couple years, I heard the 16 yr old talk about it. But this was not one of the things that concerned me in the least.

I would think that it is something that he will not tell you about until he is 16 and it becomes something that would gross you out so he will talk about it.

At 5 it is personal and embarassing, no matter what you say or think, to him it is not open for discussion. Respect him, please.

At 5 years old I would not be paying enough attention to my son's penis to know if he has erections or not. I wouldn't even think to ask such a thing. If he complains about it hurting or starts having frequent accidents when there were no accidents... yes, I'd get involved to check it out with a doctor. Otherwise.... why?

If their check up show they are otherwise healthy I wouldn't worry, but I have a son, and I grew up with brothers, and yes it is very very unusual for a boy of 5 to never get an erection. He is only 5 so he might not realize what you are asking him. You and your husband should find out first. It is not normal.

I think you probably should let it be. He may not want to tell you about them. I frankly don't see any cause for worry. In fact, I'd drop the subject completely. That is a private thing, even for children.

Yes. If he can't get an erection as a teenager and asks you about it is when I'd be concerned. He might also get them when you're not looking since I doubt (hopefully) that you are watching his penis every second of the day for an erection.
