Help!!!!!! Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

My 5 year old son Jack has aspergers and is finding it really really hard to make any friends...he came to me and said "mummy I am really trying hard to make friends but it doesn't work"...I was so sad for him as I know that he is starting to realise that when he tries to join in play he is been shunned and that he is different from the other children and it breaks my heart, I don't how to help or if I can help or who to talk to.

Thanks,

Desperate mummy

Are there any groups in your area that work on social skills? I would check around and see if any programs like that are available.

You might want to work with him on his social skills and getting to know other kids. So invite another child over for a playdate and try to make sure your son understands he can play things he wants and then he lets his guest having a turn playing what they want etc. Maybe see if there are any other children around your sons age in the area that also have aspergers who you can have your son hang out with?

You can also put him into things like karate, which helps boost self-esteem and everyone involved is judged based on their belt-level rather than any other dynamics and he doesn't need to be super athletic or anything to do it. You could also try to put him into scouts where he'll be with other kids in an adult-supervised setting.

It is very sad that this happens, I hope he will be able to make some friends.

Thanks. I have a little boy coming over tomorrow after school to play. I do try but to be honest I am not a social person myself which doen't help.

I will look into finding some after school activities to help him. Thankyou for your advice. :)
