My 5 year old daughter has been going through a no eating phase off and on for 6 months. She weighs only 35 lbs, the doctor says is underweight, duh! She says shes afraid to choke, although she's never done it, nor seen it. She also has said she just doesn't want to eat. Help......I've tried everything, from bribing her, taking away things, talking to her about it, taking her to the doctors, she doesn't eat fruits/veggies, or meat. She'd eat junk if I gave it to her (which i don't). Has anyone gone through this?? What else can I do to get her to eat!!

Make up a food chart with her, some bad mostly good foods,do it week by week,at the end off each week if eaten some of the good stuff let her choice from mc'ds or kfc. This will let her and you see the amount of things eaten.Dont stress its only yet another thing we mum's go through.Try to do meals that she can help with or have choice like toast, choice of egg, beans ect.

Try cooking with her. My daughter is a terrible eater, sometimes I wonder how she survives. She will never try anything new and most of the time just leaves her dinner on the plate untouched. But I find that if I have her help me do the cooking (obviously modified duties because she is 4!) she will eat the meal that we have cooked together.
It does sound like a bit of a dire situation though, if she is underweight and dropping...but you never know it might work. It is worth a try.

I have the same problem with my five year old. She is 5 and three months and she comes home from school with nothing but a nibble out of lunch (about 1/4 tsp taken out of one item, I have measured). She only weighs 35 pounds as well and I don't know what to do. She can't survive on that little food! I have banned all junk food and desserts because if she eats so little I want her to at least put healthier food in her body. This week it was so bad I have started sitting her down with the lunch I packed and having her eat it for dinner. That is the consequence, as well as the no junk food and she might lose out on going to a b-day party of a friend because she is on a hunger strike. I am fed up. It is unhealthy, it worries me, and it is a WASTE. We watched a program about kids who are starving today. I am at a loss, I don't want her to have a fixation on food so I don't want to go overboard, but also want her to eat and not be sick/malnourished. I have covered it with Dr. I wonder if she will have to go to a pediatric nutritionist or do therapy. She has always been little and she eats a wide range of food. We lived in Korea and she LOVED the food there, actually gained weight. We try eating the same thing here but don't have access to same foods. And when I do pack them for her she won't eat them.

Thanks guys for the advice! Brandi, I bribe her with desert too, she always wants it, but most of the time doesn't get it. She loves milkshakes/fruit smoothies, which is good, because she's not a good veggies/fruit eater.

Meghan, having her cook with me is a good idea, worth a try!! She now has good days with eating, which is good. She's on vitamins with extra vitamin c. I'll keep trying whatever!! Thanks again to all of you!!

Hello my 6yr old has always been like that. She is basically a vegaterian. she doesn't care for meat i believe its because it hurts her teeth. she LOVES junk as well. I try not to give it to her. I admit I'll bribe her with debbie cakes and a little chocolate (desert) if she eats. She is not 40 lbs. Have you tried puree food so its like a milkshake? try making veggie and fruit smoothies. I have learned you have to be creative. If she gets hungry enough she WILL eat.

My mom had the same problem with me when I was a kid. She gave me Nutella sandwhiches, icecream, cookies.... all junk but she was happy aslong as i ate something. Eventually I grew out of it. What about making her favorite foods? pizza? hotdogs? kraft dinner? Wish you the best of luck!

Ask for help from your doctor and if he/she doesn't help go to a Children's hospital.
