My 6 and a half year old, who has never acted like this, has suddenly started throwing fits when she doesn't get what she wants. Is it a phase or what?? What do I do to stop this nonsense?

Well your daughter just started this. Has anything changed in her life dramatically? Has any other children been around that hasn't been before? If so, something has changed that wasn't before, it could be trying to get attention. Besides, that if not any changes, your daughter is more than likely testing you to see if she is going to get what she wants. My mom had this problem with my sister and she just wouldn't stop the fits and throwing tantrums. My grandmother threw a cold rag on her face a couple of times when she threw her fit and my sister completely stopped all together.
If she keeps doing it and won't stop, I would do a swap on the butt and let her know you are not putting up with it. If you don't take a hand in it now, she will get worse.
Good luck.
