Hi! I'm new on here and I'm looking for some advice. I have been going back and forth with my daughter's school teachers. My daughter's speech is delayed. She's been in speech since preschool. She's now in the first grade. In preschool and kindergarten I was approached by the school superintendent about having my daughter take the test for talented and gifted children. I didn't allow her take the test because I wanted her to stay with children in her age group and not miss out on being a kid. With that said, she's now in first grade and the school performed testing on her called the Conners 3 test. I also had to feel out paperwork. I waited for months to get the results back and then the school called me for this meeting. All of a sudden according to the school my daughter has ADHD. Her teacher, reading teacher, speech teacher and the school physiatrist stated that she was aggressive and her attention span is off. She doesn't act like that at home and when it's homework time usually has the problems or answers already done. The school told me that she needs medication. Now I feel like they are just picking on her. She gets in trouble with her teacher for petty things like her pencil rolling off her desk. What should I do?

The schools are not qualified to diagnose ADHD. They can recommend that you have her evaluated, but they cannot diagnose the condition.

What consultations have you had with them since their 'diagnosis'? Have there been any meetings to address the alleged behaviours that they are now listing?

I'd recommend a physician's diagnosis, plus meeting with the school admins to see what the problem really is. If the physician's diagnosis does not indicate the need for a medication, then you have that proof to take with you.

I do too. I would ask if anything is going on bc to now say she has this and didn't before, I would think something is going on.

Thank you. They have done the IEP testing and she passed everything except the speech. The school tests her every year. I just found it weird that they decided the she had ADHD and needed medication.

Have the school do an IEP on her. My daughter is also delayed in speech and other areas. With this, they can be more detailed on things. She could be acting OUT due to something not right. Don't let them ssy she has this, when there could be other reasons to why she is doing this.
