My son is 6 and still sucks his thumb. I could really use some advice because i really want him to stop we have talked to him about it . we talk about it all the time in fact and he says he just can't stop . we have tried everything to get him to stop nothing works I'm extremely worried that hes going to have horrible teeth when he grows up and that we'll be looking at thousands of dollars ( which we don't have ) to fix his teeth they're already starting to look bucked right now and his permanent teeth haven't come in yet . Any suggestions out there I just want him to have good teeth is all.

I am thinking from experience Wendy that you are not right here. Again, my step daughter 15 has her period, and still sucking her thumb... It is not impossible. Talk to the dentist.

Please note that I am not the one that stated that this would end at puberty.....

I cannot remember why I stopped, but I know that when you are ready, you are ready. There is no majic switch.  There are definetly alot worse things I could think of that a child could be doing at this age!!!

My 6 y/o DD is still sucking her thumb.  We tried hot sauce, but it turned into this coquettish "Oh no!  Now I need hot sauce" attention-thing, so we stopped the hot sauce.  We just point it out and she stops...like four times every car ride.

Both my brothers were thumb suckers, one stopped to "stop being like baby bro," one stopped when my parents promised him a dog when he stopped doing it.  He was 6 or 7 and had blistering rashes in the crotch of his thumb all the time.

Help!!! Her new teeth have stopped growing in!

Honestly I sucked my thumb till i was 15. My teeth luckily are as perfect as can be. In fact I have the straightest in my family...more straight then my sister who had braces... My mom tried everything from tieing a string to my thumb ...tape...dipping it in pepper hot sauce.nail polish remover...everything... I still sucked it... and i love spicey food now lol...

it's a comfort thing try spending mroe quality time with your child  [ unless you already do]] keep them busy so they dont think to start sucking... but what eer yuou do dont make fun of them or tell them they look dumb or that they are acting lliek a baby it will only make them more insrcure and will probably not help...

Jill,

You said it is impossible to break.

I don't think that it is. Thats all. I think you have to keep on trying. I guess really thinking about it, everyone is different. We've tried ignoring it, we've tried correcting it. I guess I really wouldn't be able to answer that question completely due to the fact that I only see her 6 days a month. When we brought her to the dentist, he said that she could wear almost like a head gear, to break the habit, but her mom was unwilling to pay for it. Good luck to all with this problem, and I hope you get your answers..

Hey there, i also sucked my thumb until i was 12 (and on and off till i was 17) and never neeed braces (not for mechanical purposes, i have a slightly larger overbite than most but it does not bother me or make me look bad) i think i heard somewhere the damage caused is mostly dependant on the angle they suck their thumb on something like that. You can buy (in my country, NZ) yuck stuff to make her thumb taste bad, but my mum did that and it didnt work lol, as most ppl have said, you are probably not going to make her stop till she wants to, its just too hard, and you dont want her to feel ashamed of herself for being unable to stop, i hope... lol JMO

Jill,

I hear ya...

My step daughter is 15, and it hasn't stopped.

I hate it. It is getting really gross. Since I only see her 6 days a month, there is not much I can do, however. Talk to your dentist, and they have wonderful suggestions for you. Good luck!.

Thank you for noting that, Wendy...I didn't mean to send the wrong impression on my personal experience.

Hi Jill....I was a thumbsucker until I was 12 yrs. old!!!! Drove my mom NUTS!!! My teeth came in fine....crooked...and I needed braces when I was 14 and had them until I was 18. Now I'm 38 and my teeth have gone back to being crooked again.

Thumbsucking is the worst habit to break, but, trust me, once she gets to puberty, she'll stop! I know you want to break her of this habit sooner, but it's IMPOSSIBLE to break it now because for one thing, she's been doing it for sooooo long...and another..her thumb is attached to her (it's not like you can take it away).

Just be patient....choose your battles...

But I don't know about why her teeth aren't growing in....that's a new one on me!

I don't want you to be under the impression that just because your daughter sucks her thumb that she is going to have crooked teeth and need braces. I know alot of people who needed braces regardless of whether or not they sucked their thumb. Like I said earlier, I sucked my thumb until I was almost 12, and I have perfectly straight teeth...never needed braces.

Have you gone to your dentist about her teeth not coming in? Maybe it is another issue all together.

Good luck. :)

And that is caused by sucking her thumb??? The only reason I ask is because I sucked my thumb until I was about 12!!
