I feel like this behavior calms him but do not want him to ruin his shirts. Is there another option that would allow him to comfort himself?

Good advice and actually he has been seeing a Psychiatrist for a year. He spent several months in play therapy( until they closed the office and moved to a bigger city). I would recommend play therapy to anyone with a child that has behavior issues. My son had anger issues at school. It really helped. He takes Zoloft for anxiety and it works for the most part. His evaluation for a learning disorder was recently completed through the school system too. Still waiting on my copy. His anxiety disorder is common among children with ADHD(_so I am told).

Is he seeing a therapist to help him with the anxiety? I definitely think you need to look into why he is feeling the anxiety so much at school. Addressing the anxiety will be more effective than addressing the resulting behaviour.

Thank you for the input. I will try to remind him to stop when I see him. But he does it mostly at school too. I have heard of chewable necklaces but have not been successful at finding one. Also school is where he experiences the most anxiety.

It is the equivalent of thumb sucking. I'd gently remind him to not chew and try for a short term external motivation of rewarding him. Each day he has a dry, shirt, he earns a token. 5-10 tokens earns a reward; breakfast for dinner, sleeping in on Saturday, skip a chore. Something simple. Once he stops in the short term he may just give it up. If you really feel like this is an outlet for him, I might speak to his doctor or behavioral aide first.
